Facebook is a great place to engage fans and promote your business. Mass adoption makes for a lot of eyeballs. As companies realize their fans can help spread the word to their friends many try to figure out how to make that happen.
One way is to have your fans mention your Page in their status. By typing “@” and then your page name their status will show up on their friends Wall as well as your Page Wall (provided you allow fan posts). This allows for easy monitoring of who is mentioning your company.
Recently, we consulted with an organization who was doing just that. They were running a contest that required fans to mention their company via their status update. Entries would be tracked by perusing the Page Wall. Simple stuff, right? Wrong. They noticed not all entries were appearing on their Page Wall. That’s when they called us.
First we confirmed the problem. After a quick brainstorm, we determined the company hadn’t done anything wrong in the deployment of the contest. The problem lie with how each fan of their Page had their Privacy Settings set.
If a person has the “Your status, photos, and posts” set to Friends Only or Friends or Friends, their @ mentions of your Page will not show up on your Wall thus making it impossible to track.
If you want to run a similar promotion, you’d be smart to ask everyone to alter their settings during the promo in order to be considered. Another way would be to ask them to post to the actual Page Wall
